Just a "heads up" if you're having trouble printing the protractors and keeping the scale accurate. I found that with the Stupid Protractors I had to print in landscape mode with page scaling set to none. Thanks for the protractors! I am struggling a little bit and think I may need a bit of advise. With a table designed mounting distance of Calculator reccommended overhangs are not achievable example - I may be able to move the cart out to an max effective length of mm. I'm using a universal headshell which is similar dimensionally to the original Kenwood, and all original manual specified Kenwood dimensions can be met. So I am confused as to what the original intent for alignment was when the table was designed?? Hi, as you have a much shorter than usual or common arm length, in the absence of a protractor specifically drawn up for that arm, I would simply set the overhang to 9. Providing Kenwood's figures are accurate, your cart will be aligned accurately. It is also possible to check alignment and tweak further by listening to a test record although that usually applies to fine tuning the VTF and anti-skate more than the actual alignment of the cartridge.

To be honest I'd be tempted to use an overhang gauge and stick with the standard overhang. Without knowing the original offset angle it's hard to know what sort of alignment they were aiming for, or what is possible within the current headshell? Thanks for the reply. I could most likley acheive an additional 4 to 5mm of overhang for a max of approx to mm eff. I cannot comment on angle as I have not seen this number published is there an alternate way to determine this angle? I do have the original plastic overhang guage that came with the table, but this appears to place the stylus at the mm eff. length noted previously. If the plastic overhang guage is used, I assume you would just square the cart in the headshell and call it good? Hi, Yes, if you keep the cartridge square and use the gauge then that will give you the original alignment, which should give reasonable results?

If you want to experiment further you could attempt to measure the offset angle the angle between the cantilever and a line drawn between the stylus tip and the horizontal pivot point of the arm , or maybe experiment with inputting different angles into the Alignment Comparator until you get a decent distortion curve, then use Conrad Hoffman's arc protractor generator to print out an alignment template to see if you can align to it? Thanks JaS I believe that playing with those tools plus the excel spreadsheet is what brought me around to asking these questions! Plotting a Stevenson arc protractor using DIN std for the inner groove radius gives me an overhang of I might just be able to get to this one. If not, I will pursue the overhang guage suggestion. The protractors that dont have an arc offset like the stupid protractor how are you supposed to align your cart to these?

I mean you could align one position but not the other without moving the protractor I thought the whole point was to keep the protractor stationary and then align to both positions, which is not possible with the stupid protractor. I am going to try and use the "KWillis Universal Accutrak Protractor Version 2" which does have arc offset positions. Hi, There seems to be some confusion about how to use these protractors? Neither type is kept stationary between points - for this you would need a specific arc protractor designed for your mounting distance. However, it's not always easy to point the sight-line accurately at the pivot point so if there is misalignment at the second point you should then use it as you would a two-point protractor to correct it. For each alignment method Stevenson, Baerwald and Lofgren B the two-point protractors above will give identical alignment to the KWillis protractor when used correctly.

What alignment system it adheres to? Is it universal or only for Clearaudio arms? Super simple to setup cartridge with it and the result on my P3-RB is awesome. Better then the Rega Stevenson v. Hi, You won't be able to align a cartridge if you mount the arm at mm. It would require an effective length of Indeed, it's only just long enough to achieve a Can you please suggest me the best protractor for mi Pro-Ject Perspective Anniversary turntable with 9cc tonearm? Thanks in advance. Hi, Used correctly the Stupid protractor works well - the Baerwald null points will provide the lowest peak error, while the Lofgren B will give the lowest average RMS error with a slight increase at the inner and outer grooves. Alternatively you could use Conrad Hoffman's Arc protractor generator see the thread in the cartridge forum to print out an arc protractor specifically for your arm length - these are quicker to use than a traditional two-point type, but if you go this route be sure to read the instructions carefully.

Dear JaS, thank you very much for your prompt and clear response. I already used the Baerwald protractor and it seems to work well, I'll try tu study now your suggestions just to find out what else can I do to improve the setting up. Thanks again. Kind regards. This is the first time i tried to setup TT. Would be glad if anyone could share with me what's the best protractor to be used to align my Nagaoka MP cartridge on this TT? Or did i miss out anything important? Got to know the overhang is 52mm, is it right? And what's the best tracking force for this combination? Need help here, please. i am a bit lost here. what protractor to use with my combo, thorens with a fidelity research 64fx arm. the distance from spindle to pivot is mm. this thorens doesn't fit the thorens profile protractor.

and what would the overhang come down to? thanks in advance. Hi, You can use any universal 2-point protractor, but as standard your arm uses a geometry closest to Stevenson so this would leave your cartridge more central in the slots than other versions, offering better compatibility with cartridges that have an unusually long mounting hole to stylus tip measurement. They don't have a 'sound' as such so if it sounds bad either something else is amiss or you need to double check how you're using the protractor? The SL mk2 has a mounting distance pivot to spindle of mm and an effective length of mm stylus to pivot when using the standard alignment tool. Overhang is the amount the stylus tip overhangs the centre of the spindle once aligned - standard this is 15mm, but using a Baerwald protractor you will end up with FWIW you don't need to measure the overhang or offset angle, just align to the protractor as described in the instructions and it will be set.

Dear JaS: Thank you very much for your prompt reply, you're the man. Thanks again :. Hello I´m looking for the best protractor to my thorens with sme I think that the distance is mm. I don´t know very well how I should use the protractor. Anybody can explain it? thank you very much. Sorry for my english. Best regards. That seems to be the mounting distance between pivot and spindle and your model is R, right? Best overhang depends on your system that means: just measure distance from stylus to mid of screws. If approx. regards, Alfred. Thank you very much for your clear explanation and this valuable set of tools. It is also possible to share your protractor with others by simply sending them a link. The alignment tools on this site support them all. They will calculate null points for Baerwald, Löfgren B and Stevenson alignment geometries. IEC, DIN, JIS standards for the grooved area of the record can be selected as well as custom dimensions for the groove area and custom null points. The arc protractor generator can even calculate null points from the pivot to spindle distance, overhang and offset angle as specified by turntable manufacturers, making it easy to replicate stock alignments.

It depends. Aligning the cantilver has its limitations, as it is so short. This makes it very difficult, if not impossible, to set the overhang correctly with a two point protractor. It will look ok even if it is off by several millimeters. Aligning the cartridge body is not a perfect solution either. By taping a pencil lead to a flat fronted cartridge, great precision can be achieved, but that requires the cantilever to be perfectly squared on the cartridge body. In some cases aligning the cantilever is unavoidable, e. when the cartridge body has a curved front. Then it is best to avoid the two point protractor.

There are various types of overhang gauges that come with turntables. Gauges are tools for setting a certain headshell tail to stylus tip distance. Some manufacturers only specify this distance instead of providing a gauge. The actual alignment geometry depends on the dimensions and shape of the tonearm. With the cartridge squared in the headshell at the specified distance, the correct overhang and angle should be set. Overhang gauges make alignment quick and easy, but they are not the most accurate tools. When carefully done, good results can be achieved.

Below are some downloadable PDF arc protractors, used to align a cartridge to various standard null radii. Be sure to choose a protractor that matches your arm or turntable, as the accuracy of these protractors relies on the pivot to spindle distance being correct. There are 2 popular alignment families, known as Baerwald or Lofgren A and Stevenson. The 2 alignment geometries are calculated to minimise tracking error and distortion. Lofgren A or Baerwald alignment spreads the distortion across the surface of the record, resulting in the lowest average distortion figures. Stevenson alignments are optimised for zero tracking distortion in the lead out groove of the record at the expense of slightly higher distortion everywhere else. In reality the distortion figures are so low as to be of little issue. If your turntable manufacturer specifies an alignment, it is best to stick with their recommendation. If not, a Lofgren A protractor usually offers the best performance across a majority of LP records.

This protractor will align a cartridge to the factory Technics alignment, the same that is achieved when using the supplied overhang gauge. This protractor offers an extremely accurate way to align your cartridge using the Technics null radii of When aligned, your cartridge body should be parallel to the headshell, with the distance between the tip of the stylus and the rubber washer at the rear of the headshell exactly 52MM. Technics Protractor. Another protractor for the Technics, this time aligning to the Lofgren A or Baerwald alignment, with IEC standard null points of 66 and When aligned, the cartridge will sit further forward in the headshell, angled slightly inwards. This alignment offers less RMS and peak distortion than the factory Technics alignment, though you may find the difference to be subtle at best. I prefer the Technics alignment.

This protractor will work with any tonearm with a mounting distance of MM. Technics Lofgren A Protractor. A Lofgren A protractor for Rega arms mounted at MM, aligning to the IEC standard null points of 66 and Most Rega arms follow the MM mounting standard, including the RB, , , , , and many others. Rega Lofgren A Arc Protractor. A universal protractor can be found at EnjoyTheMusic. com and is a simple 2-point protractor which can be used with virtually any cartridge combination to achieve a baerwald alignment. Other protractors can be downloaded from the Vinyl Engine. If you know the pivot to spindle distance if your arm, creating your own protractor is a simple task. This Arc Template Generator will calculate an arc protractor like those above based on your tonearm mounting distance, desired null radii and any of the 3 common alignment families.

These discs will allow you to check the speed of your turntable. May I enquire if you are aware of, or can comment on, a new-to-me protractor called the Polaris. I have just forced myself to come to terms with paying for this protractor, as an alternative to utilising the downloadable freebies on Vinyl Engine. Interesting article Here. Personally I have already been there, done this and then reverted to the alignment intended for the arm.

The cartridge just needs to align perfectly at the two grids. You'll find some interesting designs floating around out there with alignment geometry's based on something entirely different from either Lfgren "A" or "B. In some cases aligning the cantilever is unavoidable, e. Without knowing the original offset angle it's hard to know what sort of alignment they were aiming for, cartridge alignment protractor free download, or what is possible within the current headshell?
